Hatred Spewed At Indieblogheaven
Yes, we would love to get up every morning, have somebody like Largehearted Boy link to us, and open our door to a box of CD's, waiting patiently. Unfortunately, I must be dreaming.
One of our cracked staffers-otherwise known as me, noticed a negative post from the Feedster search engine. Let us enjoy the uneducated ramblings of an 18 year old douche bag-
"IndieBlogheaven visited tonight. Read the quote under title of blog: "Music for people with taste." Affirms my hatred of indie snobs and hipsters who think they know what good music is. I think they just like the idea that the music is not mainstream. And therefore it is limited to a select few. They are the elitists of the audio nation. If their tasteful music choice is based on its un-popularity then they are not really "Indie". Real "Indie" would be classical music or jazz. Music who's fans are dying. Indie, as it exists today, consists of kids who more than likely rather associate themselves with an image than the actual music."
We laughed outloud while reading this. It's amazing how much negativity can come forth, just from five little words.
Lets critique shall we?
#1-Our sub-header "Music For People With Taste" pretty much includes anybody who's on this site, we gather. It's, in essence, complementing you for being here, as if to say, "You have taste!" Not that you need us to tell you that. Soccer Mom's of America aren't gonna find their Faith Hill info on this site (they don't have taste)....well, unless we find a very hot picture of her.
#2-We're not snobby and believe me, I'm nowhere near hip. Does the martini that I'm drinking count?
#3-He says "We (I) like the idea that (Indie) music is not of the mainstream."
Yeah we get chills knowing that all of our favorite bands aren't getting airplay. Yippee! I hope they live in squalor, for the sake of their indie credibility. What an idiot.
Not to mention Indie Music IS of the mainstream. Ever heard of that wacky Death Cab For Cutie? The Strokes? The White Stripes? Beck? Flaming Lips? Wilco? Do I need to list 456 bands?! Not to mention everybody on the O.C. soundtracks. Oh, and what about all of those songs in commercials. Not mainstream at all.
4-"We (Indieblogheaven) are the elitists of audio nation"
Well, if merely saying "we like this, you might like it too" is being elitist, so be it.
5-"Real "Indie" would be classical music or jazz. Music who's fans are dying."
Well, that's your opinion, but it's wrong. Ask anybody in the music/radio industry (which includes me) what an indie band is, and I guarantee you 99.9% of those answers won't be the latest classical piece. They're referring to Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah. In case you didn't know, they haven't exactly gone gold yet-just like your "Indie" classical and jazz.
6. I could also talk about his indie dress code remark, but who really cares right? Obviously this kid is young, had a bad night at McDonald's and is completely misinformed.
Well, that was fun.
While I'm on the subject, I'd like to hear what you think about the sub-header "Music For People With Taste." Is it bad, annoying, useless, elitist, etc? Let me know. I don't mind taking it down.
You can heckle this clown Caleb on his blog here.
umm, it's why there's no journey or bon jovi around....and that's okay with me

Keep the sub-header. Musical "taste" has been defined (by all sorts of people, from all sorts of centuries) as the ability to make good judgments about performing, listening to, and writing about music. (It should probably include "buying" music too, nowadays.) Music for people of taste = music that's probably worth your time, in some way or another.
But here's my real question about the main header: when amplifiers die, do they go to indie blog heaven?

I agree with gina above, yet I completely disagree with your rebuttal to this "douchebag".
the original comment does read as something my roommate would comment to me - how I'm "just listening to something because it's indie" and in that way I'm still clinging to some sort of spoonfed notion of popular music. his criticism of "indie" as popular is valid, as it's still buying into values and ideas instilled by these blogs and webzines that think sufjan is astounding or that the new belle & sebastian is going to be great (I've heard it, and I'll confirm that it is).
but your rebuttal is exactly what this frustrated reader wants. he wants to see you cite segments of his argument and tear it apart, validating your opinion, and suggesting that he's the douchebag for questioning what is, essentially, a stereotyped opinion of indie and - what comes clear in your rebuttal - your negativity, not his.
be kinder to the opinions of your readers, and maybe spin Mingus's "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady" or some Haydn or Mendelssohn now and then.

why are people so stupid about the word "indie"?
all it means is the music was released on a non-RIAA label.
