The Hold Steady/Springsteen Connection

Holdsteady_1

What can I say. I can't get enough of this band. The Hold Steady are marching all over the country, converting people who aren't already fans, into fans.

The Boston Herald just did a write up discussing the parallels between Bruce Springsteen and The Hold Steady. Listen to "Stuck Between Stations," the opening cut on the new record, and it sounds reminiscent of something the E Street band has done.

The band is well aware of the comparisons, but don't necessarily agree with them. As guitarist Tad Hubler says,

“It’s a comparison we’re used to hearing by now, but I think the comparison ends with the guitars. I’m trying to come from a more Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy place.”

The Thermals

Thermals

The Thermals weren't out to make a concept record, more like a religious record. Not one where you cringe at a Christian Rock label. More like policies mixed with the Christian Right. There's a lot of bands writing political songs these days, even politically themed albums-see Greenday.

The latest album from The Thermals The Body, The Blood and The Machine is a worst case scenario blueprint of this country. Singer/guitarist Hutch Harris says he loves the country he lives in, but wanted to take his fears to the extreme.

At only 36 minutes, it's a loud, solid piece of machinery. One of the years better albums.

....And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

And_you_will_know_us

The band from Austin, Texas, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead are back next month with their new album So Divided. It's been pushed back three times now, but looks like it will finally be released November 14th.

Conrad Keely has decided to move to New York. The bands last album was a critical goldmine in Worlds Apart. However, the public didn't fall in love with the record, as it struggled to sell 50,000 copies. That failure is spread out throughout the new album. In fact the second track, "Stand In Silence" opens with the line-"I had a band/I had a song/Where has my vision gone"

The vision now seems to be more of what the band has been known for. Riding on the experimental tip, yet not going to far to alienate future fans.

The track "Wasted State of Mind" again deals with career failers, as it uses a Polynesian drum sample. "Naked Sun" is the first song Keely wrote when he arrived in Austin. It's a tribute to indie greats Beat Happening. Then you have the bands first cover, and why not have it be from one of the greats, Guided By Voices. The track "Gold Heart Mountain Top Queen Directory," employs a wall of sound, loaded with piano and strings. Also, take note of the track "Witches Web" which features Grammy award violinist Hilary Hahn and Dresden Dolls Amanda Palmer on background vocals.

Look for more mayhem with broken everything, on tour with the Blood Brothers.
