In a typical day I get a ton of e-mails and/or full-lengths from a band wanting to be featured on the blog, which I really appreciate.
Truth be told, I don't get to all of them. Sometimes I don't get to half of them. It's impossible! Let's face it, most of us aren't blogging for a living.
So how do you get your stuff to the forefront? I'm not sure. Sometimes it's a nice package, and sometimes it's just the fact that I had time to listen, and liked what I heard.....plus, I do take American Express. That's a joke for all the payola conspiracy theorists out there.
In the case of the band Somme, it was just sheer persistence, and that's a fine line. You can't be a pain in the ass about it, sending me 12 e-mails a day either, which Somme did not do, thankfully.
I had seen the e-mails, even listened to one of their songs, which I enjoyed. It just got lost in the shuffle of..oh, I don't know... Shins, Of Montreal, Arcade Fire, Crowded House, Bright Eyes, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Menomena, you get the picture.
Somme has an EP out now called Weight, which gets better with every listen. Talk about a strong sonic wall of sound. This duo consists of a 20 year old chemical worker named Daniel Medina on guitar and Kenny Preski on drums. It's Shoegaze beauty as Spacemen 3 comparisons are dropping like a Rosie O'Donnell tongue lash. The track "Massless" gets more and more intense as it goes along, only to fall back into a sweet lull of two dancing one evening, alone on a side street in the city.
Check out their equally spellbinding track "Forge" on their Myspace page. Good stuff.
