I wasn't sure what to think when Colin Meloy said the new Decemberists record would be a departure. For example, Sufjan Stevens departure meant alienating some fans and gaining others, with mixed results. Then the words "scaled down" started showing up in interviews, alongside a few previews of the album. We quickly learned that the new approach led to a killer sounding new album, minus the historic storyline. Now, through NPR, we can finally hear the entire product. Hear The King Is Dead here.
