Organizers behind Coachella announced today that they will do Coachella times two next year. That’s the same lineup and execution at the same location on consecutive weekends.
In principal, this is genius, allowing for fans that missed the selling out of tickets another opportunity. It also is a model that will be copied for every other festival, giving you the fan more chances to take part.
However, realistically from a logistical stand point, having all of those artists stay in the same area for two weeks is unrealistic. Many would likely fly home and come back, or smaller bands would tour in the western U.S. and then return. BUT in the case of bigger artists having to fly home and then return for the second weekend, that’s going to cost even more money. That could send your ticket costs soaring. Plus, what if you have to bring their whole entourage back as a promoter? Yeah, good luck with that.
Another negative-they are likely to not stream Coachella on YouTube anymore if there are multiple weekends attached. Also, who thinks Kanye wants to reinvent the wheel twice on multiple weekends? Does anybody think he could be as amazing as he was a second time around?
If the people behind Coachella can pull this off, it would set an incredible standard. We could also look back on this a few years from now laughing on what a bust the second weekend turned out to be. I hope it works.
